DENMARK WOMEN PLAY DRAW WITH SCOTTISH OPPOSITION

Denmark women played a 2-2 draw with Scotland in an international friendly game between both sides.


Denmark scored the first goal with the Scots barely settling in. Gemma Fay cleared the ball only for Sanne Troelsgaard to pick up the ball, then skipper Pernille Harder netted the first goal of the game after receiving the ball from Johanna Rasmussen.

The Danes – a higher ranked side – continued their strong press in the first half but they were caught off guard as Kim Little fed Manchester City forward Jane Ross the ball, which she converted from 22 yards. The scoreline was 1-1.

Fay tried collecting a high ball but injured herself. This forced a delay as she was pulled out for Shannon Lynn. The player has been taken to the hospital for tests on her left foot. The replacement could not stop the attack from the Danish women as Rasmussen, who got an assist for the first goal, scored the second. (more…)

Tottenham Are in an Exciting Phase, SaysChristian Eriksen

Tottenham midfielder Christian Eriksen says that the club are going through an exciting period of time.


Aside from building a brand-new stadium at a cost of around £ 750 million, the club have also been able to rise up as Premier League title contenders without investing a substantial amount of money. The progress has been steady and manager Mauricio Pochettino has been a major factor. When Christian Eriksen came to the club in the summer of 2014, Tottenham were largely seen as competitors for the top four places. Now, they are in contention with Chelsea for the title.

The progress has certainly been masterminded by some of the players likeEriksen and Dele Alli. While the former has suffered periods of poor form, the latter has been a consistent name in the Tottenham team sheet.Eriksen, though, is certainly on his way back towards achieving his top form. Tottenham Did Not Pressure for Eriksen Rest, claims Denmark Coach

Recent reports coming from the Denmark national team have claimed that manager Age Hareidewas pressured by Tottenham to rest Christian Eriksen for the friendly match against Czech Republic.


Hareide cited a knock as the reason for Eriksen not being involved in the friendly game despite having taken part in the key World Cup qualifier against Kazakhstan a few days earlier.Eriksen seemed in great shape and even managed to score twice in the match. Tottenham have been extremely concerned about their players getting injured.

Manager Mauricio Pochettino has had to do without a number of key players for major chunks of the campaign so far.

It has undoubtedly affected of their form and the club are struggling just outside the top four with only one win in the last five matches. Managers are always concerned about international teams using their star players in meaningless friendly games.Hareide, though, has rejected suggestions that he was pressurised by Tottenham.

The manager is also facing the same acquisition with regard to striker Andreas Cornelius of FC Copenhagen. The acquisitions seemed to take a shine away from the victory, which has potentially put Denmark back on track for qualification to the World Cup 2018.

After two consecutive defeats, the team had to win against Kazakhstan in order to stay in touch with the likes of Poland and Montenegro.“We have injuries, and must always be respectful. We have a responsibility to the players and the press have a responsibility to write it correctly and not speculate that people will not play.And I have not been pressured by Copenhagen or Tottenham over players, I have not spoken to Tottenham.I cursed the fact that the press suddenly can write what it wants. Now I’ve said it so everyone will understand it,” said the Denmark manager.

DENMARK TO FACE BRAZIL, SOUTH AFRICA AND IRAQ

Denmark will trade tackles with host of the Olympic Games in Rio this summer, Brazil, South Africa and Asian squad, Iraq, in Group A of the tournament poised to begin in over 100 days. Niels Frederiksen, the head coach of the under-21 side for Denmark was quite elated with the draw.

“We could‘t have hoped for a better draw,” the coach began after the draws were concluded.”


“Even though it certainly won’t be easy, we see good possibilities against South Africa and Iraq, and it’s in these games we must get results,” the coach added.

“We’ll meet the toughest team in Brazil in the final game, which is good for us as we will have hopefully acclimatized by then. Our ambition is to reach the quarter finals,” the coach said on an endnote.

The Danes will play its first two games in the capital Brasilia before taking on the hosts in Salvador. The DBU is making plans to ensure the Danish squad meet in June and partake in some pre-tournament games. (more…)

Morten Olsen move made Denmark Empty

With Morten Olsen moving on, there is a sense of emptiness in and around the Denmark camp which is obvious as the 66-year oversaw the operations of the team for over a decade.

Like the other Danish players, the Spurs star Christian Eriksen is also finding it quite strange to work under somebody else all of a sudden, but, he reckons a change was probably the need of the hour for the Red and White and it’s not necessarily a bad thing that a new manager has stepped in.

Denmark has already played its first game in the post Olsen era and that has resulted in a win for them filling the whole squad with confidence according to Eriksen.

Speaking in Glasgow where he is present to represent Denmark in another friendly, Eriksen said, “The confidence is high with the Iceland victory. It was an opportunity for all the players to let the manager know what they had to offer and everyone did his best.”

“As we are not into Euros, it’s about World Cup qualifiers now. We would like to be in a balanced state as a team once we have that campaign on our hands in September. Until then, every friendly match that we are playing, we will push to win because that’s the best way of preparation, to keep winning.” (more…)

Erik Sviatchenko could face a spell out of the national team

New Celtic star Erik Sviatchenko could face a spell out of the national team according to assistant coach of the Denmark national team.

Peter Bonde says that the move to the Scottish giants has the ability to get the best or worst out of the defender.Sviatchenko agreed on a four-and-half year deal with Celtic. There are suggestions that the move may have been motivated by the cash, as he will reportedly earn around £1.5million during the contract period. The player turned down offers from the Italian Serie A in order to join the Scottish club.

Scottish football is going through its worst spell and it has not showed signs of getting better. It is playing catch up with the best leagues in terms of finances. This coupled with Celtic being unable to make any impact in the Champions League is only likely to hurt them in the longer run. Comparatively, the Italian league is better not just in terms of the competitiveness but also in terms of the profile. Joining an Italian club would have given Sviatchenko opportunities to join another bigger club in the near future. After the exit of Morten Olsen, Denmark have decided to go for former Malmo manager Age Hareide to lead the national team.

One of the experienced managers in Danish and Norwegian football, the 62-year-old has been in charge of teams in the Champions League. As a result, he has immense experience especially when it comes to dealing with the top players.Malmo were recently seen in the latest Champions League group stages in which they faced the likes of Real Madrid and Paris St Germain.

Both these teams are regarded as amongst the best in club football and it was not a surprising to seeMalmo receive a thrashing on more than one occasion. Still, the quality of the opposition is largely led to have lessened the criticism of manager Hareide. The 62-year-old has had no trouble in finding a new job after taking over as the Denmark national team coach. Under this job, he will have the opportunity to manage some exciting players like Christian Eriksen. The midfielder is regarded as one of the exciting talents in English football right now. Juventus goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon almost helped his team win the Champions League last season. It may have been a disappointment in the final against Barcelona after Juventus lost narrowly, but they still ended the season in positive fashion after having lifted two more trophies. After all these successes, the player would have been hoping to make it into the FIFA Ballon d’Or award shortlist. The 59 man strong shortlist was recently announced by FIFA and there was major surprise for the Italian superstar as he did not feature in this list. His agent has come out in criticism of the list.

A number of Juventus players have featured in this list like Paul Pogba, but the agent of Gianluigi Buffon believes that his client should have been the first name among them. Buffon has been praised for his loyalty to Juventus even when the club went into the second division. At 37 years of age, the Italian goalkeeper has showed no signs of ageing and may continue to play for the next few years. No goalkeeper has managed to win the FIFA Ballon d’Or award, but a few have come very close to doing so. Dieter Hecking kept Kevin De Bruyne in starting lineup

Despite continuous rumours about the future of star midfielder Kevin De Bruyne, Wolfsburg manager Dieter Hecking kept him in the starting line-up for the recent game against Cologne.

It could have been one of the reasons for the mediocre performance of the team. They were only saved by the goal from Nicklas Bendtner. The Danish international scored this vital equaliser that keeps Wolfsburg in touch with the top of the table. After the game,Hecking admitted that the performance of the team was not helped by the situation surrounding De Bruyne, who is linked with a massive £ 50 million move to Manchester City.

However, the club have been doing everything within their powers to persuade the Belgian International to stay at Wolfsburg. It will be extremely difficult since City are believed to have offered a massive £ 220,000 per week contract for the player. This will represent a threefold increased on his current wages and it will be extremely hard to turn down by the former Chelsea midfielder. Wolfsburg stand to make a healthy profit on the player, who they purchased from Chelsea for just around £ 18 million. Last season, Kevin De Bruyne was one of the standout performers in the Bundesliga with more than 15 assists to his teammates. (more…)
