BENDTNER WANTS TO STAY

Despite transfer rumours heavily linking him with a move away from Wolfsburg in the summer, striker Nicklas Bendtner has stated that his intention is to remain with the German outfit for the time being. After making the move to Wolfsburg on a permanent basis from Arsenal, Bendtner was hoping to feature more regularly in the first-team.

As the Danish international was at the peak of his powers, his expectations were seen as being reasonable although his goalscoring record in recent years has been extremely poor. Wolfsburg have not provided in the opportunity to feature in the first-team regularly despite being in several competitions over the campaign.

This may have been down to the involvement in the Bundesliga title race along with Bayern Munich, who were favourites all along the season. Despite this, Wolfsburg kept in contention with Pep Guardiola’s team and only narrowly lost out on the title – indeed on one site they were made the narrow favourites at one point in the season. It is expected that the upcoming season will be a very positive one for Wolfsburg especially due to the strength in depth.

A lot rests upon their chances of keeping midfielder Kevin De Bruyne at the club. The former Chelsea winger has been linked with Manchester City. Bendtner, meanwhile, has been the target of clubs in Portugal and his hometown Denmark.

“I want to stay at Wolfsburg. My contract runs for another two years. I am sure Wolfsburg is the right club for me. It was a fantastic season. I developed as a player and personally. Of course I would have liked to play a better role. I am looking forward to the Champions League. There are no problems between us. He did a super job,” said the Danish international about his future at Wolfsburg and its manager, Dieter Hecking. “It has to do with trust. He is a player that needs a long lead,” said defender Simon Kjaer about Bendtner.
